Martin Luther King Day is a national holiday in the United States celebrated on the 15th of January. It honors the work of Dr. King in the civil rights movement and promotes justice and equality without violence. Martin Luther King Day is considered a national holiday with no classes at other schools. However, at Eaglebrook, we honor the day by engaging in educational activities that focus on the significance of Dr. Martin Luther King’s work and the ongoing relevance of his messages. On the 15th, our school will have an exciting program: The Fifth and Sixth Forms will watch a movie called The Hate You Give while the Third and Fourth Forms watch Rudy Bridges. After each part of the movie, the students will have an activity and discussion session. By watching these movies and participating in activities and discussions focused on themes like stereotypes, tokenism, implicit bias, inequality, and activism, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of social justice issues. In addition to gaining a deeper understanding of social justice issues through the movies and discussions, The Eaglebrook Martin Luther King Day Program aims to inspire a sense of responsibility and activism among students by raising awareness about the historical context of Dr. Martin Luther King’s works. Students should reflect on their roles in promoting justice and equity. Martin Luther King Day at Eaglebrook creates an environment where students can analyze the themes shown in the movies, share their perspectives, and explore how they can contribute positively to the community.
